Tell us about yourself. What is your major and class standing? Where is your internship located and how did you get it?My name is Charli Godshall and I am a senior chemistry major. I am interested in going right into the workforce after I graduate, so my independent study adviser suggested that I look for an internship for credit during my last semester. In my major, and generally in the sciences, internships are completed over the summer in the form of research opportunities. So, I didn't know where to start to find a company that would take me over a semester for only a limited number of hours (about 10 a week for one credit). The first thing that I did was go to Coffee and Connections, which was hosted by the Career Center. Here I actually met an alumni that offered me a position in his company for the semester. However, his company was located an hour from campus, and that would have been too far a drive. Next, I went to Google and typed in "Analytical Laboratories Bethlehem." I clicked on the map and all of the labs in the area showed up. I made a list of all the labs and looked at their websites. After I determined which ones would be best, I started cold calling them and asking if they were interested in having a free intern. The first few places I called were either not what I was looking for or not interested. I finally called Silliker Labs, located in Allentown and only 20 minutes from campus. The receptionist directed me to the corporate office in Chicago. Once on the phone, I talked with Katherine, who is the head of recruiting. She asked me to send her my resume and expectations for the internship. She told me that she would contact the chemistry manager, Sara, at the Allentown location to see if she was interested. When she finally called me back (which seemed like an eternity later but was really only a few hours) she was pleased to say that Sara was more than happy to have me if I was interested. Sara has told me that what piqued her interest was the fact that I knew what I wanted and went after it and I truly believe that my initiative to call companies is what really got me my internship. Moravian College Career Centerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07678861262386772870noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7979796541145852245.post-80470536304009357932012-04-17T08:08:00.002-07:002012-04-17T08:08:27.264-07:002. How did you feel on the first day? How did it go? Were your expectations met? Can you describe anything that surprised you?My first day at the company was spent doing some general new employee training and starting my work. I read the employee handbook, safety information, and operating procedures. I was treated just like a new employee and therefore paired up with Brittany, my advocate. She is kind of like a mentor; helping me with my training or to answer any other questions I may have. Silliker is food chemistry lab. This means that companies send food to them for it to be tested. The food generally needs to be blended before any tests can be completed. This is where my training began. I was surprised that on my first day I would be doing work in the lab blending samples. I learned how to tell which way to blend samples and which type of blender to use. There is a lot more that goes into blending than just pressing a button. I left feeling confident that I had made the right decision about where to intern. I had learned so much already and I was optimistic that it could only get better from here. Moravian College Career Centerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07678861262386772870noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7979796541145852245.post-25594846211766873772012-04-17T08:07:00.005-07:002012-04-17T08:07:51.638-07:003. Tell us about your work environment and supervisors. How many people do you work with? What is great about it and what isn’t?The Silliker lab I work at is a very large space that is divided into both chemistry and microbiology segments. The micro lab is very small in comparison to the chemistry lab, which consists only of my supervisor, Sara, and 4 chemists. The fact that it is so small is a plus, as everyone helps each other out. Additionally, each and every chemist has made sure that I feel welcome. They take the time to explain to me everything that they are doing and why, which ensures that I am learning all that I can. Moravian College Career Centerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07678861262386772870noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7979796541145852245.post-34875677266881263082012-04-17T08:07:00.002-07:002012-04-17T08:07:15.337-07:004. Tell us about your life outside of the internship. Are you living in a new location? Have you met new people?Since I am doing this internship for credit during the semester, it is essentially like another class. In addition to my internship I am taking 2 classes and my senior seminar, am a senior resident advisor, HUB building manager, and tour guide. I go to Silliker 2 days a week and still have Fridays off, which is much needed as the rest of my week is so hectic. Moravian College Career Centerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07678861262386772870noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7979796541145852245.post-36011137100883567552012-04-17T08:06:00.003-07:002012-04-17T08:06:46.206-07:005. If you are earning credit for your internship, what types of assignments/projects are required by the College to earn credit? For one college credit, I am required to complete 140 hours at my internship. This works out to about 10 hours a week. Additional requirements were determined through collaboration of my internship adviser and the on-site coordinator. These requirements include completing a daily journal of my experiences, what I like and don't like about the job, and new things that I am learning about the industry as a whole. I also have a plan of action with my on-site coordinator that outlines what types of tasks I will be completing as an intern. I meet with my internship adviser bi-weekly to make sure that I am on track and getting everything I want from the internship. I also meet daily with my on-site coordinator to discuss my plan of action and what I would like to be doing and learning. I have found that, to earn, credit, there are few set-in-stone rules that I must follow. Aside from the minimum hour requirement, my internship was able to be completely customized to fit my needs. Moravian College Career Centerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07678861262386772870noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7979796541145852245.post-26938495964727360612012-04-17T08:06:00.000-07:002012-04-17T08:06:05.281-07:006. What has been your most interesting assignment/task? What made it the most interesting? The most interesting task that I completed at my internship was the blending of fragile food products. Some food products are designed in such a way that they are unable to be blended traditionally. For example, if you were to attempt to blend gummy worms, they would just get really sticky and you wouldn't be able to test them because they lose certain elements that are crucial for accurate results. So, the way around this is to place the item in the -80 degree freezer. The -80 degrees is in Celsius, which is -112 degrees Fahrenheit. After the product has been in the freezer for about 10 minutes they become very fragile. You then smash them with a hammer and put them into the blender to grind into a fine powder. This is very interesting, especially when the food product starts to reconstitute itself and become a bit slimy. It is also interesting because it teaches me a lot about different food products and their matrices.Moravian College Career Centerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07678861262386772870noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7979796541145852245.post-46549683126183382302012-04-17T08:05:00.002-07:002012-04-17T08:05:22.358-07:007. How is your internship going? Are you enjoying the work that you are given? Are you encountering any difficulties? My internship is going well. I have been learning a lot, especially because we recently absorbed another lab so we have acquired new instrumentation. I have been working closely with Kiara, who runs the instrumentation, to learn the new tests that we are offering at the lab. I have also been learning other traditional chemistry methods like ash, fat, and moisture. I have not had any real difficulties now that I have gotten into the swing of things.Moravian College Career Centerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07678861262386772870noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7979796541145852245.post-29008855198287388102012-04-17T08:04:00.000-07:002012-04-17T08:04:12.021-07:008. What was the most difficult assignment/task/challenge that you were faced with? How did you deal with it? What did you learn from it?The most difficult thing that I have done is learning the inside and out of one of the programs of one of our instruments. I was asked to determine how to export the raw data from the program so that we would still be able to access it if the program became corrupted. It was rough because the program crashed if I tried to print from the help screen. After a few days of working on it, I was able to figure it out. I then saved all of the raw data, starting from when we got the program through the current testing. I learned that the job isn't just doing chemistry, but you also have to apply your knowledge to other aspects of your work. You have to try your best to make everyone's life in the lab a little easier. Moravian College Career Centerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07678861262386772870noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7979796541145852245.post-10576163334268166432012-04-17T08:03:00.002-07:002012-04-17T08:03:29.119-07:009. What are your thoughts about your internship, now that it is over? What did you learn? What would you have done differently?I really enjoyed my internship. For me, partaking in it made up my mind that this is what I want for a career. Fortunately, Silliker was able to offer me a job at the end, so this is what I get to do every day. One thing that I would do differently is make sure that my training binder was kept up to date. Silliker requires that I have a binder with all of my paperwork in it. When I first came into the intern position, they did not think that they would have a position open for me so I did not keep up with it. Now that I am hired, I have to go back through the system to find all of the paperwork that needs to be printed out. Even if they hadn't offered me a job, I would still have liked to keep it because it would have prepared me for what I will have to do when I got a job. Moravian College Career Centerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07678861262386772870noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7979796541145852245.post-54229935969155686232012-04-17T08:02:00.002-07:002012-04-17T08:02:43.253-07:0010. What advice would you give to future interns? How did your internship benefit you? What tips/suggestions do you have for future Moravian interns? My advice would be to be bold. To get my internship, I had to cold call places to see if they would take me. In the end, it got me the job. I am already getting paid - even with a month of school left - because I completed all of my hours and they really want me to stay. My other advice would be that you shouldn't be afraid to speak up. If you see something that could be fixed or improved, your boss will appreciate that you are voicing your opinion. It really shows them that you care about the position. This internship was such a great experience, and anyone who has the time to do one should.Moravian College Career Centerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07678861262386772870noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7979796541145852245.post-74664977931812878632011-10-12T11:39:00.001-07:002011-10-12T11:39:21.831-07:001. I also had only had brief experience working in a lab and was nervous they would expect me to know everything! I ended up loving my roommate so that helped, and everyone else in the program was so nice. My lab was understanding and taught me a lot to the point that within one or two weeks they trusted me to run experiments by myself. This internship went above and beyond my expectations and it was definitely the best summer I have had since I entered college. I also began to love the city and became a master of public transportation and I think it would be amazing to be able to live in NYC to either attend medical school or work in one of the many amazing research labs there.
Moravian College Career Centerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07678861262386772870noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7979796541145852245.post-63618991405321375602011-10-12T11:38:00.000-07:002011-10-12T11:38:02.991-07:003. Tell us about your work environment and supervisors. How many people do you work with? Everyone was so friendly and willing to help and answer any questions I had. I liked having the small group environment and getting to know everyone personally. It was also nice on a networking basis to be able to get to know the head of the lab so that I could request a letter of recommendation. Everyone’s schedules were also variable and as long as you got your work done you would come into lab at any time. The part that wasn't the best about the lab experience was needing to participate in weekly lab meetings where articles and current work was discussed. I was put on the spot on many occasions to answer questions way outside of my knowledge, but I guess in the end it was good practice for being in a real lab!
Moravian College Career Centerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07678861262386772870noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7979796541145852245.post-70123552171433725522011-10-12T11:37:00.000-07:002011-10-12T11:37:13.896-07:004. Since I was part of a larger summer program, everyone was housed with roommates, and I ending up making great friends with people from all over the country that were there participating in the same program (50 people!). I still keep in contact with some of the people I met, and we plan on having a reunion possibly over winter break. The one part that worried me going into the internship was that I would be living in the Bronx in NY which doesn't have the best reputation. Albert Einstein is located in a nicer area of the Bronx however, and it was a great chance for me to get out of my comfort zone. I fell head over heels in love with New York City and even the Bronx for its unique atmosphere and world famous Italian food. I spent weekends (and even some weeknights) going into Manhattan to explore the city, go to museums, see free concerts, go shopping, and see shows on Broadway!
Moravian College Career Centerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07678861262386772870noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7979796541145852245.post-61344777089293744342011-10-12T11:36:00.000-07:002011-10-12T11:36:01.608-07:005. I knew they all had much more experience than me, so I was afraid they would ask very difficult questions. To prepare, I practiced my presentation several times to myself and to my roommate. I also looked up a lot of background information to prepare for any question that might be thrown my way. I learned how to be able to present my search in an official way, as well as to answer difficult questions on my feet.
Moravian College Career Centerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07678861262386772870noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7979796541145852245.post-56506688102241022462011-10-12T11:32:00.000-07:002011-10-12T11:32:39.185-07:009. There were 50 other people from all over the country in the program and I was able to meet and get close to so many of them and that in itself was a learning experience. What tips/suggestions do you have for future Moravian interns?
<span style="font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: "Arial Unicode MS";">This internship not only benefited me by having the experience for my resume, but it taught me better communication skills and prepared me to live and work on my own. I would recommend future interns to totally embrace their internships and not just focus on the work but also to form relationships with others in the program. I would also recommend that they take a chance to explore the area they are in. For me, being in NYC allowed me to experience so many different cultures through art, entertainment, and food. My best advice/ tip is to have fun and don't be afraid to experience new things!
Moravian College Career Centerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07678861262386772870noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7979796541145852245.post-8586934492855791802011-05-04T11:15:00.000-07:002011-05-04T11:18:25.324-07:001. Tell us about yourself. What is your major and class standing? Where is your internship located and how did you get it?<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">My name is Taressa Diaz. I am a senior Sociology major and Business Management minor. I am currently an intern at PPL Corporation, a fortune 500 utility company located in Allentown, PA. I currently work in the Human Resources: Recruiting and Selection Department. I was also an intern at PPL in the Human Resources: College Relations Department in Fall of 2010. I have always known about PPL since I am from Allentown. I also have an aunt who has been employed with them for over ten years. I had known that they were a good employer, so I sought out their internship opportunities. I plan on working in Human Resources upon my graduation in May, so once I saw that they had internships in their HR department I made sure that I applied. After completing my internship in the fall, I was offered another internship position within their HR department. I started the new position in January and will be working there until graduation. Working at PPL has been a great experience, I have learned so much about myself as an aspiring professional and I have been able to enhance my leadership, team-building, and communication skills. I am looking forward to learning even more in my new department.Moravian College Career Centerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07678861262386772870noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7979796541145852245.post-21630228118310930282011-05-04T11:10:00.001-07:002011-05-10T08:47:42.902-07:002. How did you feel on the first day? How did it go? Were your expectations met? Can you describe anything that surprised you?
I<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"> was very anxious on my first day. I had a professional job previously working at the local court house part time, but working in corporate america was a totally different feeling. I was unsure of what the culture was going to be like and what to expect from my supervisors and the other people within my department. In my head I had assumed that everyone would be very serious in personality and somewhat hard on me as an intern. However, it was quite the opposite. Everyone within my department was so outgoing and friendly. They all made me feel welcome and were so eager to help me with any questions. They really made me feel like a part of the team and that was a great relief for my first day jitters. It was a very professional environment and a comfortable place to work. I was surprised at how much fun they all had at work. Everyone had a never ending list of things to do and they would get it all done but still manage to find time to laugh and enjoy work. It was great to see and I hope that I can have that type of work environment when I graduate and begin my career.
Moravian College Career Centerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07678861262386772870noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7979796541145852245.post-34632868296098912572011-05-04T11:08:00.001-07:002011-05-04T11:18:55.891-07:003. Tell us about your work environment and supervisors. How many people do you work with? What is great about it and what isn’t?
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif";"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">My work environment was ideal to me. I had friendly co-workers who were eager to help me but willing to let me learn and do things on my own. My department was made up of nine people and had great team dynamics. I really felt like a part of the team. I was given meaningful work that was a great deal of responsibility but it felt great to be able to make a contribution to the department’s efforts. My supervisors were also great. They were very helpful and gave me great insight with their constructive feedback and taught me how I can improve myself as an aspiring professional.
Moravian College Career Centerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07678861262386772870noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7979796541145852245.post-86317703227153194332011-05-04T11:07:00.001-07:002011-05-04T11:19:08.000-07:004. Tell us about your life outside of the internship. Are you living in a new location? Have you met new people?<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;">Both of my internships have taken place during the school year so I am not living at a new location. My internship is located in Allentown, PA so it is a short drive from the college. During my internship last semester as well as my internship this semester, I have met many people within the organization and have had a chance to expand my 'network' as well as develop professional relationships with various employees within the Human Resources Department. I also have had a chance to build relationships with other interns through the networking events that PPL offers for the Cooperative Associates. At the events, we are able to meet and network with each other as well as meet with representatives from different areas within the organization.<span style="font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Moravian College Career Centerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07678861262386772870noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7979796541145852245.post-52116254606265969682011-05-04T11:04:00.001-07:002011-05-04T11:19:22.512-07:005. If you are earning credit for your internship, what types of assignments/projects are required by the College to earn credit?
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I earned credit for my internship that I had in the fall. I was able to earn 2 credits for this internship rather than just one because I was working 30 hours per week. To get this to count for credit, I was required to select a professor to advise me throughout my internship experience. I chose Dr. Katie Desiderio. I met with her bi-weekly and we discussed the projects and assignments that I have been working on for my internship. I was also required to submit one journal entry to her each week describing my experiences that week. For my final project, I created a 20 minute PowerPoint presentation describing my experience at PPL. I presented this to my department at work as well as Dr. Desiderio. For my final grade, I was graded on my presentation, my involvement in the bi-weekly meetings, my completion of assignments, as well as the feedback that Dr. Desiderio gathered from my supervisors regarding my performance. For my internship this semester, I was unable to get it to count for class credit because it was within the same department (Human Resources) at the same corporation.
Moravian College Career Centerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07678861262386772870noreply@blogger.com0
